August 2024

NEXT MPRO MEETING

The orchestras next meeting will be held on Monday, September 9th at 7:00pm.

UPDATES

Members will be provided with music and sound files for our meetings. The files for the music of the current season will be available to members for downloading throughout the season. The current members of the orchestra should have already received these files by email. Also a limited number of copies of the sheet music will be available at the meetings.

All members, new and old, are requested to fill out a membership form, included at the end of this newsletter and which can also be found on MPROs website, https://mpro-online.org  This will insure that our records are up to date. The completed membership form can be returned by either emailing a copy to MPRO at midpeninsularecorderorchestra@gmail.com, or by bringing it to the first rehearsal meeting that you attend and giving it to Chris Flake. In either case dues can be paid at the rehearsal meeting.

CONDUCTORS CORNER

Dear members of the Mid-Peninsula Recorder Orchestra,

Welcome to MPROs sixty-second season as the orchestra prepares for more fine music making. As during last season, meetings will take place at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Avenue at St. Francis St., in Redwood City from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. For those who are located too far to attend in person, I am pleased to announce that this coming seasons meetings will also be streamed via Zoom. Ray White will be sending out invitations to all MPRO members with links to these hybrid Zoom meetings. Please contact him at <rayhwhite@yahoo.com> if you do not receive an invitation.

I am also happy to announce that Greta Haug-Hryciw will be returning this season to direct two meetings while I am out of town. The first of these will be the meeting on October 7, and the music she will be working on that evening is listed below along with the titles scheduled for the meetings on September 9 and September 23. This music has already been sent out to the orchestras membership along with part assignments. Please note that sopranino, great bass and contrabass recorders as well as bassoon will be needed at all three meetings and that krummhorns and sordun are called for on September 23. Finally, everyone is asked to practice and become familiar with the scheduled music before the first meeting in September.

Schein: Suite No. 15

Mesomedes: Hymn to the Sun

Handel: Worthy is the Lamb

September 23

Anonymous: Planctus quem Virgo

I look forward to working with you again in September and encourage you to let any of your friends who play early instruments know about the orchestra’s activities this season and invite them to attend our upcoming meetings.

Sincerely,

Fred Palmer

Message from MPRO Board President

Dear MPRO members,

the MPRO 24/25 season is fast approaching with the first rehearsal set for Mo, Sep 9 at the Redwood City Veterans Memorial Center - same place as last season.

First of all, I hope you all will be able to join for the new season. Fred has sent out the music and part assignments, and we have a concert planned for December at Trinity Presbyterian in San Carlos. All the meeting dates have been posted on the MPRO website (https://www.mpro-online.org/)

Our membership fees will remain the same as last season ($160 for full membership, $40 for associate membership, $60 for student membership). You can find details and sign-up forms on our website and in the this newsletter.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation, you can do so through SFEMS (https://www.sfems.org/donate) indicating MPRO as the recipient.

MPRO is an affiliate of the San Francisco Early Music Society (SFEMS). SFEMS handles the IRS paperwork associated with our non-profit status, takes 7.5% from our donations to offset its expenses, and returns "disbursement" checks to MPRO for the remainder.

For direct donations (not tax-deductible), please give your check to the MPRO Treasurer Chantal Moser at a rehearsal or mail it to her at the address in the membership list.

Good news: all of our board members have agreed to serve another season except for Mary, who has resigned as treasurer.

We have the following positions filled:  treasurer (Chantal), membership (Chris), newsletter (Tom), website (Dan), recordings (Ray). Thank you to all returning board members and a big thank you to Mary for having been a member of MPRO since 1988 and having served on the board as president and treasurer during that time.

However, we do have some key positions still open and do need your help. We are looking for a secretary and coordinators for publicity and the workshop. Please let me know if you are interested. For those of you who love to design cards, flyers, or brochures, or would like to learn, please consider the publicity board position. Fred and Mary have existing artwork and templates to get you started.

I hope to see all of you soon at the rehearsals, and I am looking forward to a fun season  together with lots of great music.

Please reach out to the board or myself if you have questions.

Best regards, Kathrin
