OCTOBER 2014

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Fellow MPRO Members,

The year started off well for our membership. We had four new players join us for our first meeting, three of whom returned for the next one, with the fourth set to join in January for the spring half of the season. We are grateful for their interest and abilities and look forward to getting to know them.

Unfortunately, longtime member Mary Jeanne Fenn will not return to the MPRO this year. We will miss her and will need to find a replacement for her role in our publicity projects.

Publicity is an especially challenging area, since it requires multiple talents and skills. This is why we’ve historically had multiple people handling it — one for contact lists, another for media outlets, another for press releases, another for artwork, etc. Like the yearly workshops, it’s a great example of our members coming together to get things done without excessive formality or management.

If you’re interested in contributing to our publicity efforts, please feel free to contact me.

In the meantime, we have plenty to keep us busy learning the new pieces in preparation for the December 6th Holiday Concert.

Cheers,

Dana

  MPRO Picnic

MPRO kicked off its 52nd season on September 7 with a picnic on Fred Palmer’s patio in Belmont, overlooking San Francisco Bay. The weather was perfect for enjoying the delicious potluck offerings while conversing with MPRO friends.

Chef  Fred’s vegetables, hot off the barbeque, were “best of show.”

The Saltarello

Georgio Mainerio’s “Caro Ortolano” offers MPRO an example of the saltarello, a lively, medieval Italian dance. The name is derived from the Italian verb “saltare” meaning “to jump.” This describes the leaping manner in which each measure begins. The saltarello began as a Neopolitan court dance, became an Italian folk dance and was incorporated into classical music by Mendelssohn, Berlioz and others. It remains a popular folk dance today.

Here are links to two youTube versions of the saltarello.
