MARCH 2017

HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY TO SID SIMON!!!

Sid Simon, who joined MPRO shortly after it was formed in 1962, will turn 100 on March 26, 2017.  In honor of his birthday and his long association with MPRO, the Board of Directors has decided to make him a lifetime Honorary Member.  Congratulations, Sid!

(Sid’s biography, titled “MPRO’s Oldest Member,” is included in the November 2013 issue of Upbeat. This and other past issues are available through the “Newsletter” link at www.mpro-online.org.)

MORE AUTHENTIC THAN GREEN BEER

The following are links to interpretations of early music by two Irish traditional music bands.

Planxty Mozart is a “battle of the bands” between the Chieftains and the RTE Orchestra.  RTE (Raidio Teilifis Eirann) is Ireland’s national radio/television network. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yPMb48OAQs .

Arrival of the Queen of Sheba in Galway Bay is played by De Danann (with no apologies to Handel) at https://youtu.be/MB8NhXtgG_A .

You can also celebrate March 17 with Celtic music at http://thistleradio.com/ .

“Thistle and Shamrock” is a radio program, produced in Scotland and syndicated on some NPR stations, that is apparently unavailable in the Bay Area. However, you can listen online to streaming music through the “Listen Now” button, and access the ten most recent one-hour radio programs through the “Listen Again” button.

REMEMBER,  O THOU MAN

On March 8, MPRO will begin rehearsing Richard Geisler’s arrangement of this song for recorder orchestra.  Thomas Ravenscroft was a chorister at Chichester Cathedral and moved to London where he sang at St. Paul’s and wrote music to accompany plays at the Globe Theater. He is best known for publishing three collections of British popular music, including catches, rounds, and street vendor songs.  Remember, O Thou Man was first published in Ravenscroft’s Melismata in 1611. This is a  facsimile of the 1631 edition:  http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/ravenscroft/melismata/.  The last entry in the index is a link to the facsimile page for Remember, O Thou Man, with the lyrics.  This is a vocal recording of the piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUj7gEYezRM, and this is an instrumental recording by an early music ensemble including a recorder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUj7gEYezRM.
