MPRO UpBeat March 2016APRIL-MAY 2016

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

To address our ongoing financial uncertainty, the MPRO Board of Directors has decided to increase dues effective at the beginning of the next (2016-2017) season.  Dues for participating members will increase from $100 to $125.  Dues for associate members will increase from $35 to $40.  Dues for student members will not change.  Scholarship assistance will continue to be available.

The Board believes that our dues, even with the increases, are reasonable compared to the costs of music performance classes and similar programs offered through local adult schools, recreation departments, and community colleges.  MPRO's

2015-2016 season involves 19 rehearsal sessions, a total of 38 hours. The cost per rehearsal hour for participating members works out to $2.63 under this season's dues structure, and $3.29 with the increase.

The following are examples of costs per rehearsal or lecture/lab hour for comparable music programs:  (1) Palo Alto Adult School, Symphonic Band, $2.89;  (2) City of Palo Alto Recreation Department,  Baroque Chamber Ensemble, $8.10; (3)  De Anza College, Early Music Study and Performance class, $2.56; (4) College of San Mateo, Wind Ensemble class, $2.67.  Rehearsal hours were used in calculations because performance hours are not available for all programs. College class costs include mandatory student and parking fees in addition to "per unit" fees.

The Board will be discussing additional ways to increase MPRO's revenue (such as building our membership and seeking grant funding) and to decrease costs (such as seeking a less expensive rehearsal location). Members who have specific ideas or suggestions are welcome to pass them on to me at a rehearsal or by email to judith.unsicker@gmail.com.  Thanks to everyone for your continued support of MPRO!   - Judith Unsicker

The orchestra’s spring concert will offer a wide variety of exciting and attractive music, and I encourage you to invite your family and friends to attend this performance.  I would also like to thank the members of MPRO for all of the time and effort that they have put in preparing this season’s music, as well as MPRO’s President, Judith Unsicker, and the orchestra's officers for seeing to the necessary tasks that make MPRO's programs possible.  Special thanks go to Greta Haug-Hryciw for continuing to serve as the orchestra’s Assistant Director and conducting a portion of this season’s spring concert.  I wish all MPRO members the very best this summer and look forward to seeing all of you again in September at our first meeting of the orchestra’s 2016-2017 season. - Sincerely, Fred Palmer

SUMMER VACATION

Because MPRO’s spring concert is earlier this season, and because information for the remainder of this season’s rehearsals is included in this issue of Upbeat, there will not be a separate May issue.  The September issue will include rehearsal information for the beginning of the 2016-2017 season.

If you expect to experience recorder “withdrawal symptoms” over the summer and would like to find or form a small group to practice informally, you can use the mpro-members@googlegroups.com email list to contact other members.

MPRO still needs an official newsletter editor, and this summer would be a great time to learn what the job involves. It’s not difficult and I would be glad to help you get started.  Please consider volunteering for the editor’s job, or for one of the other vacant Board positions listed below.   -Judith Unsicker
